Installing Magento crashes WAMP - SOLUTION

Posted by on 10 April 2014

I was testing Magento 1.8.1 on my local WAMP server and could not get past the installation (or even to the installation).

I found this article http://www.anthonychambers.co.uk/blog/magento-1.7-crashing-apache/7 which was a great help.

Apparently there is a bug in PHP versions < 5.3.11 where file sizes that are an exact multiple of 4096 bytes (4KiB) will cause Apache to crash and restart. The following is the key part of the solution:

  1. Navigate to your Magento directory
  2. In the search box in the top right, type in: size:4096
  3. In the results:
    \app\code\core\Mage\Core\Controller\Varien\Router\Admin.php
    \lib\Zend\Form\Decorator\Fieldset.php
  4. Open each and immediately after the <?php tag just enter a space

Although the file in question was not 4096 bytes on my machine I tried editing it anyway and lo and behold it worked. I have a feeling adding a space to any file and saving it may break it out of this error but have not confirmed this. If you try this and it works then please let me know and I will update this article.
